Sleep Disorders Q&A

What are sleep disorders?

Sleep disorders are conditions that prevent you from getting restful sleep every night. Without sufficient high-quality sleep, you can experience daytime sleepiness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and other symptoms that affect your quality of life.

Westchester ENT offers diagnostic testing and treatment services for common sleep disorders like:

Primary snoring

In primary snoring, you sleep well, as far as you can tell, but make excessive breathing noises that are disruptive to the sleep of others.

Obstructive sleep apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles in your throat relax too much during sleep, block your ability to breathe, and interfere with your ability to take in oxygen.

You may stop breathing periodically throughout the night and wake up gasping for breath. People with obstructive sleep apnea also snore loudly, which can disturb the sleep of others.

When should I seek help for sleep disorders?

You should schedule a diagnostic evaluation for sleep disorders at Westchester ENT if you have symptoms like:

  • Loud snoring
  • Gasping for breath during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Falling asleep at inappropriate times

Dr. Spingarn offers physical exams to identify structural issues in your nose or throat that can affect your sleep quality. He may also recommend the Watch-PAT® home sleep apnea test that records important details about how well you sleep while you sleep in your own bed.

How are sleep disorders treated?

There are several treatment options available at Westchester ENT for sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea, including:

Weight Loss

A weight loss plan is often an important component to treating obstructive sleep apnea, which is a disease that often affects heavier patients.

Mandibular advancement device

A mandibular advancement device is a nonsurgical solution for people with obstructive sleep apnea who don’t want to use a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine.

The device is an oral appliance that fits over your upper and lower teeth to hold your jaw in a forward position. You wear it at night to keep your airways open and prevent snoring and breathing disruptions while you sleep.

Palate implant

A palate implant uses three or more tiny inserts that go into your soft palate to prevent tissue from collapsing and blocking your airways during sleep. The inserts also stiffen the structure of your soft palate to reduce vibrations that cause loud snoring. Common implants include the Pillar and Elevoplasty implants.

Dr. Spingarn performs these minimally invasive implants during a quick, in-office visit. The implants can provide noticeable symptom improvement within 6 weeks and can offer long-lasting results.

Surgery

Some operations in the nose and throat can improve obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. Dr. Spingarn can perform many of these operations, if needed.

If you have other types of sleep disorders, such as insomnia, restless legs, or narcolepsy, Dr. Spingarn can discuss your options for treatment. He may also refer you to a sleep medicine specialist for additional testing and treatment.
