Pediatric ENT Q&A

What is pediatric ENT?

Pediatric ENT services focus on conditions that affect the ears, nose, and throat of children.

As a board-certified otolaryngologist, Dr. Spingarn can diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions that are common in children, including:

  • Allergies
  • Sinusitis
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Enlarged or infected tonsils and adenoids
  • Chronic or recurrent ear infections
  • Ear cleaning
  • Hearing loss
  • Tongue tie

The onsite audiology staff also uses advanced technologies to evaluate hearing in children of all ages, including infants and toddlers who can’t respond to testing cues. This can be especially helpful in cases of, for instance, speech and language delay.

When should I schedule a pediatric ENT consultation?

You should schedule a pediatric ENT consultation at Westchester ENT if your child experiences symptoms like:

  • Ear pain
  • Ear discharge
  • Speech and language delay
  • Open mouth breathing
  • Chronic runny nose
  • Allergies
  • Frequent sore throats
  • Snoring
  • Recurrent ear infections

Signs that young children who can’t yet speak may need diagnostic testing for ear, nose, or throat disorders can include ear pulling, fussiness, difficulty sleeping, and/or fever.

A child who doesn’t respond to voices or sounds may also need a pediatric ENT consultation to identify infections or hearing loss.

If you’re unsure whether your child needs an ENT assessment, you can call our office at 914.686.3950 to discuss your child’s symptoms with our staff.

What can I expect during a pediatric ENT appointment?

During your child’s initial pediatric ENT appointment, Dr. Spingarn reviews their medical history and current symptoms. He performs a physical exam of your child’s ears, nasal passages, neck, and throat to check for abnormalities such as inflammation, obstructions, or infection.

In cases of suspected allergy, Westchester ENT offers onsite allergy testing to identify your child's allergy triggers, including skin prick tests and blood testing. Dr. Spingarn customizes an allergy treatment plan to treat existing symptoms and prevent new ones from developing.

If your child has balance problems or signs of hearing loss, the audiology staff performs tests to identify the cause of symptoms. Technologies are available to estimate hearing loss, even if your child is too young to answer questions about their hearing.

How are pediatric ENT conditions treated?

Based on the results of your child’s tests, Dr. Spingarn designs a treatment plan for your child to address ear, nose, and throat conditions, including:

  • Medications
  • Immunotherapy for allergies
  • Surgery

Dr. Spingarn continues to assess your child’s progress. He may request regular checkups if your child has allergies or another chronic condition that requires long-term monitoring.
